The Center of the U.S.
This may not be of
interest to you viewers in other countries, but it might cause you to want to look up similar information for your own country...The
geographical center of the contiguous United States...the 48 that touch...is two miles northwest of Lebanon, Kansas. There's
a marker and a flag. To get that point, they made a scale cardboard map of the U.S., then put a pin where it balanced!
But wait; it gets complicated. If you include Hawaii and Alaska, the center moves to up in South Dakota.
And if you want the center of population, in 2010, Missouri got into the act, with that "people point" being
in Texas County, 2.7 miles northeast of Plato, Missouri.
But it keeps moving,
and the Census Bureau expects it to move to Wright County, Missouri at next census, and should be about 9.5 miles north of
Hartville. But what might be the most interesting thing about us, is the 75% of the U.S. population, live on 4% of the
land! And all the people on earth could live in Texas' space! It's that big, and warmer than Alaska, our
Want to get historical? Why in the world is our nation's capitol
way up in our northeast, around 1500 miles from the country's center. Well, it was laid out back in our colonial days,
and was a sensible location at that time. It was ten miles square at first, and they buried 40 markers around it, and a few
of them are still there.
And did you know that several religious denominations
held church in our capitol building in those early days, because they didn't have their own churches. What a change today,
when they've come up with that silly "church and state" excuse to get God out of the operation of our nation.
Never mind that our nation was founded by people who came here to escape countries that had "official" religions.
That's why our forefathers set up an unhampered "Freedom of Religion," The words "church and state"
are not in our constitution.
What a change we have seen! As I've mentioned
to you at other times...Pogo, in a comic strip of the past, said, "We have met the enemy, and they are US." We've
taken God out of public places, including our schools, and our leaders are wondering why things are so wrong in our nation
today. The reason is as plain as the dust on their Bibles.
