We were sitting peacefully in our living room the afternoon of this writing, when the
TV’s news department broke into whatever program happened to be on, and suddenly we were watching from the air, via
a news helicopter, watching a person driving aimlessly through neighborhoods, trying to elude police who were after him.
He had stolen a car and now was a hunted and wanted man. And
we were watching from above as he ran! He would stop, turn around, and go back the way he had come. He would go up one street
and down another…into one that he didn’t know was a cul-de-sac, and we watched as he circled in front of the
houses in that area and headed back the way he had come. And it was as if we were God, looking down!
Finally, we watched as he stopped the car in the middle of a
street, got out and started running through a yard and then found something that we later realized was an old mattress. This
is where he hid…or thought he was hidden…but we watched the whole thing. In a few minutes, several policemen
surrounded him, pulled off the mattress, and put handcuffs on him where he lay.
And despite his being a thief, I sat there feeling sorry for him and saying some
kind of prayer for him. And what can you say…not "Help him get away, Lord." Not "Let them get him
on his feet and into a warm coat," because the temperature was in the 20’s, even under that afternoon sun. I said
something like, "God help him." And my thoughts went to how God was watching, too, as we were. He saw the car
as its driver went aimlessly, surely knowing that he didn’t have a chance, until finally it was over and he had lost.
It was a perfect picture of the sinner
who looks for any pleasure to get him through another night, not wanting to think about the end that’s bound to happen.
He uses that end as a curse word, and continues to try to hide from God. We pray for better world leadership and better
role models to follow, when we should be praying for the guy down the street who needs Christ…the Real Answer.
