I suppose people around the world who love to read, know O’Henry.
I have his complete works…The Last Leaf, The Gift of the Magi and all the others. One that I check-marked in the
"Contents" list of one of his books, was "The Man About Town." The story of a fellow who got to wondering
just who and what is a "man about town." He asked all kinds of people from diners to millionaires, but no one really
knew, and their guesses didn’t satisfy him.
In his search, he was crossing a street and was hit by a car and was hospitalized. And the morning newspaper had an account
of a man whose injuries were not serious…"He appeared to be a typical Man About Town."
People can spend a lifetime wondering about things
that, after all, are not important. The one thing that is important is the question "Where will I spend eternity."
And you really don’t have to ask that one. The answer is in your Bible, and there are only two places in the answer:
Heaven and hell, and one is the destiny of each of us.
"Hell" is mentioned at least 63 times, from Deuteronomy to Revelation, while "fire"
is spoken of in a religious sense, many more than that. But by the time you’ve read just a few of them, you’ll
see that it’s a place to shun at any cost.
And what is the cost to avoid it? Simply to give your heart and soul to Christ, and keep it there. The "keep"
part is to put God first in your life, living in love of Mankind and in love of the good things in the world.
And what’s wrong with that! Hadn’t
you rather see smiles than frowns?
Hear nice words than curses? Feel love rather than hate? The Christian life is all
the good things you want in your life. And the Way is to realize them is to tell the Lord that you’ve finally admitted
that your life is not your own; that it’s His, and you want to show you believe it by turning your life over to Him.
Show genuine repentance for your past, believe that Jesus is the Christ, and accept the free gift of salvation he offers
to everyone. You have the key; use it.
