Question: Who is more important to you…the
leader of your country, or your pastor.
you’ve never given it thought, it may surprise you that I propose that your pastor is the more important to your life,
and your very being.
nation’s leader, (and in our country, our president), has the responsibility of concern for your well being for such
things as jobs available for you and your family, and that he chooses advisers who are interested in such areas as schools,
businesses, and even our relationship to other countries. That list is long.
But your church pastor has a much higher calling…the well being of our souls. Nothing
can be more important than that. Matthew 10:28 says, "…fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to
kill the soul, but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." The former is concerned only
with your time on earth; the latter has to do with your place in eternity.
And so you must first choose carefully the church to attend, and I’m safe in the Lord
to advise you to choose one where the Bible is preached, and you’re encouraged to read for yourselves, and even bring
your Bible with you to services. It’s your badge, so to speak, and carrying it is a message in itself. I’m not
saying carry it with you to the grocery store and everywhere you go, as that can give the wrong "holier than thou"
message. There’s reason in all things, so let your life be your bible in day to day life.
But with choosing a church means choosing a pastor…a
shepherd, as it were, as Jesus Christ was, and is. Because I’ve talked with you at other times about how a congregation
is influenced by that pastor, and will tend to lean to even his personal beliefs. His thinking should be on obtaining and
keeping your soul ready for the hereafter.
And then your responsibility is to uphold him and encourage him. He’s only human, so a word about his sermon will lift
him as you shake hands after a service. Show your approval for the study he gives for your good. And pray for your pastor…the
most important person in your future.
